
Stockbridge

• Stockbridge, located in Ingham County, is recognized as one of the oldest farming communities in Michigan.
• The first settlers arrived in the area in 1835. Elijah Smith, one of the early landowners, laid out a townsite that he initially proposed to name Pekin.
• The Village of Stockbridge was officially incorporated in 1889.
• The arrival of the railroad in 1883 ushered in what became known as “boom times.” The business district expanded rapidly as Stockbridge developed into a commercial hub for the surrounding area.
• During the 1930s, Stockbridge was part of a prosperous vegetable-growing region once known as “the salad bowl,” which drew large numbers of farm workers from Kentucky.
